ABOUT Antonio Pulgarín (b. 1989) is a Colombian...

Antonio Pulgarín (b. 1989) is a Colombian American lens-based artist, arts education administrator, and advocate currently based in Seattle, Washington. He received his BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2013. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, he began his career, as an arts educator and administrator, working for multiple non-profit organizations, developing equitable arts programming for youth across the country. In his artistic practice, his work is an exploration of Latinx and Queer narratives in America. As an artist his work has been previously exhibited at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Aperture Foundation, Baxter St CCNY, Longwood Art Gallery, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz, BRIC, and Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland. In addition, his work has received honors from YoungArts, The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, EnFoco, The Magenta Foundation, Latin American Fotografia, American Photography, and PDN Photo Annual.

His artistic practice is deeply informed by his intersectional experiences as a Latinx and Queer individual living in America. Throughout his work, he utilizes photography, mixed-media, collage, and installation to create conceptually focused works that tackle the themes of cultural and queer identity, memory, and displacement. His most recent work are a natural progression of familiar themes that explore Latinx masculinity and the politics of queer desire through appropriation and collage. All finalized works are printed on archival pigment paper and presented onto different surfaces such as canvas, adhesive vinyl, bamboo plywood, aluminum, and acrylic glass. The finalized treatments of each collage pay homage to the way photography was presented and visually consumed in his childhood home—taped or pinned to a refrigerator, mirror, or religious iconography. In his work, he continues this tradition by veering away from the formal framed image to present his work in new ways. Through the use of mixed-media installations, Pulgarín is interested in exploring photography and collage as sculpture within a space. At the very core of his practice, the collaged elements in his work remind the viewer that these images have been intervened, brought to the present, and reimagined as a new archive.

Pulgarín’s work has been featured in publications such as Vice, The Advocate, UnSeen Magazine, Visual Arts Journal, New York Daily News, BESE, Slate, LensCulture and The Huffington Post.
